Celebrating the Breedekloof'‘s Finest on International Cap Classique Day

As we raise a toast on International Cap Classique Day annually on the 1st of September, we want to put the spotlight on our Breedekloof Makers, who make some of the finest. Renowned for its unique terroir and masterfully crafted Cap Classiques, the Breedekloof Valley’s offerings stand as a testament to the meticulous art of wine-making.

Quest Brut Rosé Cap Classique

Each vineyard tells its own story, and Quest's saga began in 2010 with an unwavering determination to showcase iconic French blends grown in South African soils. This Brut Rosé Cap Classique, with its compelling mix of Chardonnay and Cinsault, is a masterful interpretation of the region's terroir, offering notes of strawberries, raspberries, and white peach. It's a feast for the senses, especially when paired with matured brie cheese or West Coast mussels.

Quest Brut Cap Classique

Crafted exclusively from Chardonnay grapes grown in rich limestone soils, this Cap Classique resonates with notes of peach and citrus, making it a perfect accompaniment for oysters from the Garden Route or the spicy notes of Cape Malay dishes.

Jason's Hill Private Cellar Arrois Cap Classique 2018

A pioneer in its own right, the Arrois Cap Classique 2018 is the first in the Breedekloof Valley to be crafted from 100% Chenin Blanc grapes. Ageing for 42 months on lees, this Cap Classique offers bright, fresh apple and white peach aromas, making it a perfect match with salmon or roasted chicken.

Mariëtte Cap Classique 2016 from Belle Rebelle

Belle Rebelle's Mariëtte Cap Classique is a golden beauty that boasts a mesmerising stream of bubbles. Tones of citrus and pear underline its notes of lemon cream and biscuit. Produced according to the traditional method, Chardonnay grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks and a second fermentation in the bottle. Aged on the lees for a staggering 64 months, this rich and complex Cap Classique pairs beautifully with seafood, making it a match made in heaven with dishes like fish carpaccio, oysters, sushi, or even shellfish in a rich sauce.

Merwida Blanc de Blancs Cap Classique

Merwida's recent entrant to the Cap Classique category celebrates the delicate art of bubble creation. The Blanc de Blancs Cap Classique, made from 100% Chardonnay, boasts light, yeasty aromas and a limey fresh fruit palate. The traditional French method of sparkling wine creation is followed meticulously, with the wine ageing for 24 months in the bottle on the fine lees before it's riddled and de-gorged. Fresh oysters, sushi, or a lovely fish fillet are perfect partners for this sparkling delight.

Lategan MCC Brut 2018

This Chardonnay-based Cap Classique offers aromatic notes of citrus peel, lemon curd, and biscuit, resulting from spending 32 months on lees. It's a testament to the estate's unique Mediterranean climate, characterised by late snowfalls and a significant diurnal temperature variation that ensures the slow ripening of grapes. The resultant wine captures the heart of the Breede River Valley's terroir, characterised by weathered sandstone and diverse soil parent materials.
